You spin through a loop of three trades and — if the stars align — come out the other side with slightly more than you put in. It's one of the prettiest ideas in trading, and dissecting it reveals something important about how markets police their own consistency.

The idea: a loop that profits

An exchange doesn't just price coins against the dollar. It runs many trading pairs — Bitcoin against the dollar, Ethereum against the dollar, and also Ethereum directly against Bitcoin, and so on. Each pair has its own price, set by its own order book.

Here's the subtlety: those prices all have to stay consistent with each other. The ETH/BTC price should logically match what you'd get by going ETH→dollars→BTC. When all three pairs agree, there's no opportunity. But markets move tick by tick, and for a fleeting moment the three prices can fall slightly out of sync — one pair lagging the others. When that happens, a loop opens.

Walk it concretely. You start with dollars. You buy Bitcoin. You use that Bitcoin to buy Ethereum directly on the ETH/BTC pair. You sell that Ethereum back to dollars. For a human, the loop that looked like free money is usually a small loss after costs.

Even though you'll almost certainly never profit from it directly, triangular arbitrage is worth understanding because of what it reveals: markets enforce their own internal consistency through relentless, automated hunting for exactly these little contradictions.

Every trading pair on an exchange is connected to every other through loops like this. The constant, invisible activity of arbitrage bots scanning for triangular opportunities is part of what keeps all those pairs honest and aligned — so that ETH/BTC really does match ETH/dollars and BTC/dollars, moment to moment. It's the same self-correcting force, turned inward, that keeps different exchanges' prices in line with each other. The market's coherence isn't a given; it's manufactured, continuously, by machines competing to exploit the smallest cracks.

Triangular arbitrage is a genuinely clever, genuinely real phenomenon — and a genuinely poor target for an individual trader. It's a high-frequency, automated, infrastructure-heavy game decided in milliseconds and fractions of a percent. If a course or "bot service" promises you easy triangular-arbitrage riches, be deeply skeptical; you'd be entering a race against firms purpose-built to beat you, and the realistic outcome is fees and frustration.

Appreciate it instead for the insight it gives. It's a window into how efficient these markets really are — so efficient that not even a three-way contradiction between prices on the same exchange can survive more than a flicker before the machines erase it. Once you've seen that, you understand why the "obvious free money" in crypto is almost always already gone: somewhere, a bot got there first, and it got there a long time before you finished the thought.
