The bridge era: where the billions went

If you want to understand the 2021–2025 stretch of crypto crime, look at bridges — the tools that move assets between blockchains. They became the favorite target for one brutal reason: they pool enormous amounts of locked value in one place.

The Ronin Network hack of March 2022 is the textbook case. Ronin was the bridge powering the game Axie Infinity. Attackers — later linked by investigators to the North Korean Lazarus Group — compromised the validator keys that approved withdrawals and walked away with roughly $620 million. The chilling detail: nobody noticed for almost a week. The theft was discovered only when a user couldn't withdraw funds.

Then there's the Poly Network hack of August 2021, where an attacker exploited a contract flaw to drain over $600 million across three chains — and then, bizarrely, gave almost all of it back, claiming they'd done it "for fun" and to expose the bug. Poly Network publicly thanked them and offered a job.

In February 2025, the Bybit breach reset the record books: attackers manipulated a routine transfer and made off with roughly $1.5 billion in Ether — the largest single crypto theft ever recorded at the time. What's notable is that Bybit stayed solvent and honored withdrawals, a sign of how much more robust top exchanges have become since the Mt. Gox era. The exploit wasn't a broken vault; it was a manipulated signing process — proof that the human and interface layer is now the soft spot, not the cryptography.

The teenage social engineer

Not every great heist is about code. In July 2020, a 17-year-old in Florida and a few accomplices pulled off the Twitter Bitcoin scam. They didn't break Bitcoin or any exchange. They social-engineered their way into Twitter's internal admin tools, hijacked the accounts of Obama, Elon Musk, Apple, and others, and posted a simple message: send me Bitcoin and I'll send back double.

It was a crude scam — the oldest one in the book — but riding on the world's most trusted accounts, it pulled in over $100,000 in minutes before Twitter froze the verified accounts. The lesson is uncomfortable: the weakest link is almost never the math. It's people, trust, and urgency. The same psychology powers pig-butchering scams and the phishing sites that drain wallets.

The DAO: the hack that rewrote history

Some heists don't just steal money — they fracture a community. The 2016 DAO hack drained about 3.6 million ETH from a flagship Ethereum project and forced the entire network to make an impossible choice: reverse the theft and betray "code is law," or honor immutability and let the thief keep the loot.
