How Solana Was Built: Speed, Outages, and an Unlikely Comeback
An ex-Qualcomm engineer became obsessed with making a blockchain as fast as the internet. He nearly succeeded, got tangled up with the worst scandal in crypto history, watched his network crash to near zero, and then came roaring back. Solana's story is a rollercoaster.
Some blockchains are designed around a philosophy. Solana was designed around a grudge against latency. Its creator spent his career making chips and radios run faster, looked at how slow blockchains were, and decided the entire industry was thinking too small. The engineer who hated waiting
Anatoly Yakovenko spent years at Qualcomm, deep in the world of high-performance systems where microseconds matter. When he turned his attention to blockchains around 2017, the thing that bothered him wasn't decentralization or economics — it was the clock.
Existing networks were slow partly because there's no shared sense of time. Thousands of computers scattered across the planet have to laboriously agree not just on what happened but when. Yakovenko's insight, which he wrote up in a 2017 whitepaper, was a technique he called Proof of History — a way to cryptographically stamp transactions into a verifiable sequence, like a tamper-proof clock baked into the chain itself. With the order already proven, validators could stop chattering back and forth and just go fast.
He teamed up with Raj Gokal to handle the business side, founded Solana Labs, and the network's mainnet went live in March 2020. The pitch was bold: thousands of transactions per second, sub-second finality, and fees of a fraction of a cent. While Ethereum users were choking on double-digit-dollar gas fees, Solana felt like a different decade of technology. Speed, of course, came with trade-offs — running a Solana validator is demanding and expensive, which makes the network more centralized than Bitcoin or Ethereum. That tension never fully goes away.
Solana's whole identity is the bet that most users care more about speed and cost than about maximum decentralization. It's a legitimate position — and the opposite of Bitcoin's. Who funded the rocket — and the shadow it cast
This is where Solana's story takes a dark turn that still shapes how people see it.
Among Solana's most prominent early backers were serious crypto venture firms like Multicoin Capital and Andreessen Horowitz. But the most visible champion was Sam Bankman-Fried — the founder of the FTX exchange and its trading arm Alameda Research. SBF built his flagship DeFi project, Serum, on Solana, held enormous quantities of SOL, and became the face of the "Solana ecosystem" during the 2021 bull run. For a while, that association was rocket fuel; SOL soared past $250 and was hailed as a genuine "Ethereum killer."
Then, in November 2022, FTX collapsed in one of the largest financial frauds in modern history, and Bankman-Fried was later convicted. The fallout for Solana was brutal. Its most famous backer was exposed as a criminal, gigantic amounts of SOL were tied up in the bankruptcy, and the price cratered from around $38 to under $10. The outages that didn't help
Solana's self-inflicted wounds made the obituaries easier to write. The network suffered a string of outages — several times it simply stopped producing blocks, usually when a flood of transactions (often bots fighting over a hot token launch) overwhelmed the validators. For a chain whose entire brand is "fast and reliable like the internet," going completely offline was the worst possible look. Critics had a field day, and they weren't wrong to.
The comeback nobody scheduled
And then Solana did something genuinely surprising: it refused to die.
Through 2023 and 2024, the developer community stuck around and kept shipping. The team and ecosystem ground through the stability problems — and a second, independent validator client called Firedancer, built by the trading firm Jump Crypto, promised to make the whole network far more resilient by ending its reliance on a single piece of software. A wave of new activity — fast consumer apps, payments, and the speculative frenzy of token launches that Solana's low fees make possible — pulled it back from the dead. Solana's technology is the real deal. The performance is not marketing — when it's running well, it genuinely feels like using a normal app, and that user experience is a big reason developers building consumer-facing products keep choosing it. Its comeback from the FTX wreckage is one of the more impressive things I've watched in this industry, and it permanently disproved the lazy take that the network was "just an SBF coin." Communities that survive their own near-death tend to be tougher afterward.
The cautions are equally real, and I won't soft-pedal them. The high hardware requirements for validators make Solana meaningfully more centralized than its biggest rivals — a real philosophical cost, not a footnote. The outage history, even if largely addressed, is a reminder that the relentless pursuit of speed can come at the expense of robustness. And a lot of Solana's recent activity is driven by extremely speculative token trading, which is exciting and lucrative right up until it isn't.
